Tumblr is launching ad-free browsing from “anywhere in the world”—at a cost.
“Enjoy the same snappy Tumblr you know and love (including yes, mobile) without the interruption of ads,” Tumblr explained in a blog post.
The ad-free experience costs $4.99 per month, or $39.99 if you’re willing to pay upfront for a full year. That’s the equivalent of four months for free, so it’s worth it if you’re a regular Tumblr user.
To sign up, simply navigate to Account Settings on desktop, select “Go ad-free” and choose between a $4.99 monthly or $39.99 annual payment option. In the future, go to “ad-free browsing” to manage your subscription, which automatically renews every month or year. After that, “you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite blogs and posts without any annoying ads.”
This is a completely opt-in perk; Tumblr will not force anyone to sign up and you can continue to enjoy a free, ad-supported experience if you wish.
In September last year, Tumblr opened its Post+ Premium subscription option to all US users, allowing creators to charge $1.99, $3.99, $5.99, or $9.99 for access to content. In total, Tumblr currently hosts approximately 544 million blogs in 18 languages.
